Maroon Settlements

Maroon Settlements

Jamaican Maroons descend from Africans who freed themselves from slavery in Jamaica and established communities of free black people in the island's mountains.

Maroons are known for their guerilla warfare and rebellious nature. They continually resisted the slavery that was forced on Black people, and eventually signed a treaty with the English to document a ceasefire, which secured their independence and freedom. The Maroons of today govern their own communities, and are not policed by the government of Jamaica.
